I used to work in advertising and we always thought of innovative ways to promote the next best thing. Although it brought much success to the company, it often diagnosed the consumer with decision paralysis and inevitably caused them to buy things they really don’t need.

Before you get used to the new ____________, companies have already started planning and creating buzz for the next new ____________. Even if you don’t think you need it, advertisers do a great job making you feel like you’re missing out if you don’t have the latest gadget, car, purse or shoes.

For years, we have fallen victim of pursuing the latest must-haves and not taking time to enjoy what we currently own. When will we learn to be content and not become prey to the predatoriness of paid advertising and the personal opinion of people?

There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious and planning for the future. However, the issue surfaces when one becomes so desperate to keep up with the latest trends and satisfy their insatiable hungry for acceptance or success that they risk their happiness, health, wealth and even family.

There must come a time in our lives where we begin to realize that to obtain “things” does not always yield the greatest happiness. The truth of the matter is, once you finally get what you’ve been waiting for, there will always be something bigger, faster and more stylish waiting to be marketed to the public.

So how do we avoid the trap of the “I need more” syndrome?

  1. Take time to appreciate what you have
  2. Write a list of 10 things that you’re grateful for
  3. Avoid impulse buying
  4. Don’t compare your current situation with others…stay in your lane

Feel free to share some of your experiences and ways you’ve learned how to be content with what you have
